Hercules and the Wagoner

A Farmer was driving his wagon along a muddy country road after a heavy rain. The horses could hardly drag the load through the deep mud, and at last they came to a standstill when one of the wheels sank up to the hub in a rut.
Một người nông dân đang lái xe ngựa trên con đường quê lầy lội sau cơn mưa lớn. Đàn ngựa gần như không thể kéo nổi chiếc xe qua lớp bùn sâu, và cuối cùng chúng hoàn toàn dừng lại khi một bánh xe lún xuống tận trục trong một vũng lầy.
The Farmer climbed down from his seat and stood beside the wagon looking at it, but without making the least effort to get it out of the rut. All he did was curse his bad luck and call loudly on Hercules to come to his aid.
Người nông dân bước xuống xe, đứng bên cạnh nhìn ngó, nhưng chẳng hề ra tay cứu xe khỏi vũng lầy. Ông ta chỉ biết kêu trời trách đất và lớn tiếng cầu xin Héc-quyn đến giúp đỡ.
Then, it is said, Hercules really did appear, saying: “Put your shoulder to the wheel, man, and urge on your horses! Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it and complaining? Hercules will not help unless you make some effort to help yourself.”
Rồi, tương truyền rằng, Héc-quyn quả thật đã hiện ra và nói: “Hãy tự mình đẩy bánh xe lên, và thúc ngựa tiến tới! Anh tưởng chỉ nhìn và than vãn là xe tự chạy được sao? Héc-quyn sẽ không giúp nếu anh không chịu tự giúp bản thân mình.”
And when the Farmer put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses, the wagon moved very readily, and soon the Farmer was riding along in great contentment, with a good lesson learned.
Và khi người nông dân tự mình đẩy bánh xe rồi thúc ngựa chạy, chiếc xe liền thoát ra dễ dàng, chẳng mấy chốc ông ta đã ung dung ngồi trên xe tiếp tục hành trình, lòng khắc ghi một bài học quý giá.
